How We Got Started - One of a Kind Adventure Gear

   Robert Barber, Founder & Owner

Born in the Motor City, but raised in the country, Robert possesses a built-in love for the outdoors. As a teen, when not outside learning about the natural world, he spent time working hard in the family business, learning what it means to serve customers. After graduating from Lawrence Technological University with a degree in Business, Robert has spent his career in retail and customer service, always putting the needs of the customer first. A few of his jobs and hobbies have also required hands-on work which has highlighted his mechanical, design-oriented and problem-solving skills.

As a kid, if he wanted a particular piece of gear, Robert would figure out how to configure it with items he had on hand or by sewing something from scratch. He has more than 25 years experience working with the equipment needed to make custom gear. Repairs became nearly as important as new creations because of his obsession to get the most out of every piece of gear. One of a Kind Adventure Gear was born out of the desire to modify and repair existing gear and clothing to meet the needs of an excellent outdoor experience. When an item doesn't perfectly meet one's needs or if it doesn’t even exist, Robert will custom-make whatever is needed.

His work is well traveled: from The Appalachian Trail to the North Country Trail, Philmont to The Grand Tetons, and as far as Mt Everest. Repairs, modifications, and custom-made items from One of a Kind Adventure Gear can be seen on these trails and many other places.

In addition to his craftsmanship skills, it is Robert's desire to share the outdoors with others. As a Eagle Scout himself and long-time Boy Scout leader, he is very passionate about inspiring the next generation to get outside, explore the natural world and serve others. He and his One of a Kind Adventure Gear team provide seminars to Scout groups, youth groups, and school groups on a wide range of outdoor topics: Backpacking 101, The Values of Teenagers in the Outdoors, How to Plan and Train for Successful Outings, Winter Camping and Survival, Executing Outings from a day hike to a 2 week trek, 20 miles from Nowhere, and more.

Contact One of a Kind Adventure Gear for your gear needs or to have Robert speak to your outdoor group. You'll be glad you did!
